During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, children around the world struggled to continue their education in the midst of lockdowns and quarantine. Particularly in India, widespread school closures and a lack of technological development within the education system left teachers wondering how they could effectively reach their students. CLT India (Children’s Lovecastles Trust), a nonprofit organization based in Bangalore, rose to the challenge and mobilized their teachers, education department officials, and leaders in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to formulate an action plan which successfully mitigated the loss of learning anticipated to hit India’s youth during the pandemic. 

Over 60% of India’s population live in villages with lack of government assistance for local public schools. E-Patashale, CLT India’s e-learning program, was built to prioritize accessibility. As there are tens of languages spoken across India, the platform needed to be available in many different versions. Furthermore, the technology itself had to be affordable yet adaptable to situations such as access without internet, and user-friendly enough that teachers could easily learn the ins and outs of the applications. 

With the support of CAF America’s grants, CLT India was able to further extend its programs to reach even more children from marginalized communities throughout India. Such partnerships proved vital to the expansion of their programs: Rotary Club International, Menda Foundation, Aseem Infrastructure Finance Limited, Michell Bearings India Private Limited, and many others worked hand in hand to help CLT India implement their digital classrooms throughout many more districts, broadening their reach to thousands more teachers and students.


Between 2021 to 2022, CLT India was able to:

  • Implement their e-learning program, E-Patashale, in 257 schools
  • Train 1,664 teachers
  • Impact 38,758 students

Over their 25 years of service, CLT India has:

  • Implemented 13,500+ digital classrooms across
  • Trained 81,600+ teachers
  • Impacted 2.7 million students

CLT India did not stop there: they also managed to organize a digital literacy program at CLT India’s campus for teachers from 30 schools in Karnataka to attend and learn how to better serve their students in the digital age. CAF America’s grants also facilitated the launch of their apps for teachers and students, JIGI, which provides users with STEM resources and related content for online learning.

CLT India’s CEO, Nixon Joseph, attributes the program’s success to CLT India’s collaborative approach to learning and project implementation. He claims that “collaboration is key to scale and sustainability;” working with individuals across all sectors leads to widespread, unified growth in the education sector and provides their organization with visibility that is vital to aspects such as funding and public trust. Since first becoming eligible with CAF America in 2015, the organization has received over 100 grants from a variety of donors.

Looking ahead, CLT India hopes to continue on this path of success and reach 100,000 teachers by the end of 2022, while finding more new and innovative ways to embody their organizational vision, “Access to quality education for all.”

“Going forward the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, has put special emphasis on online and digital education. This will pave the way for EdTech to be increasingly integrated into India’s education system and enable new and more cost-efficient methods of running educational programs, content distribution, and consumption. I, therefore, see bright days ahead for CLT India as we specifically focus on quality digital content, continuous training of teachers, the digital infrastructure that works without the internet, and regular up-gradation of content.”

Nixon Joseph, CEO, CLT India (Children’s Lovecastles Trust), Bengaluru. Before the present assignment, he was President & Chief Operating Officer of the SBI Foundation. He is a Certified Credit Professional, Certified Banking Compliance Professional, and Certified Information Systems Banker.

As Coordinator of the SBI Youth for India fellowship program, he was instrumental in inspiring and mentoring 100 youths every year and had taken the fellowship to a higher level. Many projects of the fellows including those in the education sector have been mentored by him. He has been mentoring many social entrepreneur units started by SBI Youth for India fellows. Has completed the “Social intrapreneurship” course of Ashoka Changemakers with distinction. 

A regular speaker in various CSR & Sustainability forums & Universities all across India, to date during the lockdown period he has participated in more than 325 webinars as chief guest/guest of honor/panelist speaker.

As CEO of CLT India, he is driving the digital Stem education initiatives which have already been implemented in 4200 schools and benefited 2.6 million students.

He is an Honorary Professor, School of Management & Commerce, APG Shimla University, and visiting faculty of the International Institute for Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. He is an advisor to various NGOs and Foundations. He is an advisory committee member of the Disruptive Literacy Global Partnership which is aiming to improve foundation literacy in India.
