Every day, people choose to give to places where impact lives. While many people imagine philanthropy begins with a formal structure like an established foundation, a board meeting, or a strategic plan, it often begins long before any official decision or action takes place. It starts with a moment. A conversation that carries weight, a family story passed down, a moment of loss, a spark of gratitude, or a lifelong passion finally calling for action. Philanthropy starts with a feeling that something in the world needs to change — and that you might play a part in making that change possible.
A Donor’s Turning Point: When Life Calls You to Give
The decision to give is deeply personal. It’s rarely about checking a box—it’s about honoring something that shaped them.
For CAF America donors Peter and Jan Swinburn, the foundation for giving was laid long ago. As they shared, there was “no magic moment,” but rather a set of values instilled early, with both raised to help those less fortunate. Peter grew up “in a pretty impoverished environment,” witnessing families struggle in the aftermath of the Second World War and through lack of employment, while Jan’s work teaching children with special needs revealed just “how little help and support is available.” Together, these experiences created a lasting awareness of both need and responsibility, one that would later shape how and why they give.
That perspective eventually translated into action. In early 2016, the Swinburns established their International Donor Advised Fund with CAF America, beginning what is now a decade-long philanthropic partnership. Over that time, they have directed more than $2.4 million to social purpose organizations, primarily in the United Kingdom, supporting causes like youth arts and culture, housing and shelter, and afterschool education. Their approach is consistent and intentional, with thoughtful annual gifts that allow organizations to grow and plan with confidence. As they describe what giving means to them:

“Giving is a privilege and more than anything makes us feel humble when we see all the hard work done by charity workers. Seeing young gymnasts becoming national champions because they can train on the correct equipment, the homeless being coaxed back into society through storytelling or unemployed, not in education youngsters finding their voice through creativity is just the best feeling you can experience.”

Donors often carry this same sense of purpose, along with questions that follow. Where do I start? How do I know what will actually help? What if I get it wrong? These are the moments where intention can get stuck between hope and hesitation. For donors like the Swinburns, the answer has been steady, hands-on giving supported by trusted partners.
Moving from Emotion to Action
Advisers often enter the story when a client’s desire to make a difference meets uncertainty. Their role is part strategist, part listener, part interpreter of values, acting as a bridge between aspiration and execution. Great advisers listen not just to what clients say, but to what they mean. They hear the legacy a client hopes to create, even when the client doesn’t yet have the language for it. They help clients refine their “why,” clarify their intentions, and explore ways to structure their giving. This clarity allows donors like Peter and Jan to focus on the “now” rather than the distant future.
For these donors, philanthropy is not about distant horizons or names etched into the future. It is about what changes today.

“I’m not really into legacies,” donor Peter reflected. “I just believe in the impact that can be created now.” That belief shapes every giving decision they make. Rather than funding long-term research or broad initiatives, they focus on immediate causes where the results are visible, tangible, and deeply personal.
Their approach is intentional and focused:. “We hope we can meaningfully impact one person at a time, preferring to go a mile deep and an inch wide rather than the other way around.”
Behind every philanthropic act is a human story, and advisers help carry these stories forward. They help clients honor their memories, their passions, and their hopes for the world. With the right support, they turn intention into action, and action into lasting, meaningful impact.
Helping Advisers Turn Vision into Global Impact
Advisers play an essential role in unlocking a client’s willingness to give. CAF America strengthens that partnership by making global giving possible, safe, and strategically aligned with client values.
We help advisers:
- Navigate complex global giving regulations so clients can give confidently across borders.
- Access vetted, trusted international partners that align with the client’s mission.
- Build philanthropic strategies that reflect personal stories, values, and long-term goals.
- Measure and communicate impact, turning each act of generosity into a ripple effect that clients can feel connected to.
At CAF America, we believe that every story has the potential to change lives. And when clients, advisers, and global partners come together, that potential becomes reality.
